This special curated collaborative Canada 150 project celebrates key songs from Canada’s history, performed by seasoned and emerging artists. They’ll share stories and reflections of Canada’s history and character through a quintessential songbook selected by the five artistic directors from the Winnipeg, Calgary, Regina, Vancouver and Canmore Folk Music Festivals. These songs and the artists in the project will commemorate Canada’s exceptional stories, cultures, artists and people.

Canada Far & Wide: Grands Esprits messes with genres and perspectives. The repertoire celebrates traditional Canadian songs from our 150-year history plus key Canadian songbook compositions by trailblazers like Joni Mitchell, Hank Snow, Buffy Sainte-Marie and Leonard Cohen. For instance, a French traditional group might perform a 50- year-old country ditty; an indigenous cellist will reinterpret a blues song and pop singers will contribute their take on a classic Newfoundland tune.

Artists will tour between the five festivals, with some different artists in each market. On July 26 at the Jubilee Auditorium, Jason Collett, Basia Bulat, Cris Derksen, Turkwaz, DJ Shub, Mélisande (électrotrad), Birds of Chicago and Barney Bentall will perform in-the-round, each taking the lead on a few songs as the others jump in, providing support on vocals and instrumentation. The show’s grand finale will be lead by the innovative Choir! Choir! Choir. The big choir who rehearsed songs with them at Boot Camp that week will join them on stage.

Choir! Choir! Choir will then lead the entire audience in a mass participatory sing-a-long.
