Trigger Warning

Josh Silburt April 4 to April 30 Vernissage: Thursday, April 6th from 6:00 – 9:00pm Born and raised in Manitoba, Josh Silburt (1914 – 1991) aspired from an early age to become an artist and studied at the Winnipeg School of Art under L.L. Fitzgerald. He rode the rails to Toronto during the 30's and found work as a sports and political cartoonist while continuing to study at the Ontario College of Art. Josh's left wing politics collided with his professional life in the early days of the Cold War. At the end of the Stalin era, Josh, along with many of his cohort on the Communist left wing, abandoned their political ideals and set their lives in a new direction. Josh, along with a small group of landscape painters that met at the Willowdale Art Group in north Toronto, focused on interpreting the Canadian wilderness. Over the next 3 decades, Josh developed his unique style of palette knife application of vivid oil impasto and later brushed acrylics, capturing the beauty and ruggedness of Canada.
