And we back! Sister to Sister's welcomes you back to enjoy a night of poetry, visual art, music and theatre from some of Canada's flyest women of colour! This month features Nasra Adem, Stephanie French and the incredible Jacqui Du Toit with her self written, directed and performed work "The Hottentot Venus: Untold". An original theatrical storytelling, based on the life and death of Sarah Baartman. Directed | Written | Performedby Jacqui Du ToitThis theatrical storytelling performance, follows the story of one of the first indigenous African woman from the Khoisan clan to be taken from her home, Cape Town, South Africa and put on display as a ‘freak’ show, at 225 Piccadilly, London in 1810.The storytelling is captured within 5 chapters/scenes; told by 5 (fictional) female characters, (performed by Jacqui Du Toit), all of whom have had some form of connection with Sarah (also known as Saartjie), on her life journey and beyond, whether it be spiritual or physical. Each character gives various perspectives of Saartjies journey (drawn from true facts about her life) seen from their eyes; giving the listeners a multi-dimensional approach to this brave and incredible woman's life.The story of Sarah is a just one of the many stories of women of colour who were taken from their homes and sold as slaves and exploited for their features, across the European market during the 1800’s as a ‘freak’ of nature. MEET YOUR FEATURES: JACQUI DU TOIT Jacqui Du Toit is an international theatrical and movement storyteller from Kimberley, South Africa. Since graduating from the University of Cape Town with a BA in Theatre and Performance in 2005, Jacqui has worked extensively as a professional actress, storyteller and dancer for the past 10 years. Her experience covers a wide range of fields including: Storytelling, writing, directing, acting and puppetry. Her passion and perseverance of performance art has taken her to many destinations and festivals around the world, including performing with an African circus that toured Canada in 2008.Jacqui now resides in Ottawa, Canada where she performs theatre, dance and African storytelling with her company 8thGeneration Storytelling. With 8thGeneration, she travels across Canada and her home country, South Africa sharing her passion in the arts. She is also the co-owner of Origin Studios in Ottawa, one of the first fully black owned art studios in the capital city of Canada.Her most recent performances include, The National Museum of History, Canada, 2015/ Ottawa Storytelling series (UN)told – She speaks/ Ottawa Children’s storytelling festival 2012-15/ International Children’s festival 2012-2015/ South African Embassy, Canada 2013 – 2015/Black History celebration at Parliament Canada – 2016/The Hottentot Venus – Untold – 2016 / African Women Diplomatic Forum, Africa Day -2016 / Westfest – 2016 / Ottawa Jazz Festival – 2016…..just to name a few. STEPHANIE FRENCH Stephanie French is a born and raised Edmontonian with a passion for the arts. Her first major performance was at the Jubilee Auditorium at the age of two with her church choir. Since then she has performed on every major stage in Edmonton and refuses to stop there. Her influences include jazz, r&b, gospel and pop. At the age of five, she started playing classical piano and went on to complete her Grade 9 Royal Conservatory Exam in 2011 before switching to playing pop music. In addition to singing and playing piano, Stephanie plays guitar, writes spoken word poetry, teaches music lessons and writes her own songs. NASRA ADEM Nasra Adem is a 23 year old queer, Muslim, multidisciplinary artist, community organizer and activist. She is the current Youth Poet Laureate of Edmonton and curator of Sister 2 Sister: an artist collective for/by femmes of colour and Black Arts Matter-Alberta's first all Black arts festival. She is also the 2017 Emerging Artist Mayor's Award recipient.
