Trigger Warning
The California Art Club reveals the intriguing qualities of small-format artwork with the exhibition Miniatures En Plein Air, currently on view at its gallery at the historic Old Mill through January 8, 2017. The display features more than 70 original paintings – small gems no larger than 9 by 12 inches – that capture fleeting moments of time. The selected works include serene seascapes and sweeping landscapes, as well as vineyards, hiking trails and urban settings. All of the miniatures were created en plein air – or “in the open air” – utilizing some of the techniques that the organization’s founders employed more than a century ago, when they inspired the artistic movement known as California Impressionism.
