Trigger Warning

let’s hold hands
and run in the rain
play hooky from life
pretend that we’re twelve
instead of the scarred vets we are

we’ll lick jelly off spoons
eat raw cookie dough
take off all our clothes
and jump in the lake
forget about heartache
and sickness and death

we won’t hear the clock tick
we’ll giggle and dance
find dragons in clouds
and laugh at bad jokes

won’t cost us a thing
but a few daylight hours
and if you insist
when the skeeters come out
pull on our grownup hoodies
and go home smiling
