Trigger Warning

Small towns lose contact with the highway.
Half a mile to nowhere
becomes the road less traveled
and gas stations stare blankly at the weeds.

Each building in town
shrugs its shoulders
and cracks back on old clapboard
with a fumbling yawn.

Everything would be a going out of business sale sign.

Except the sign-maker went out of business.
