Trigger Warning

The treatments will be
for fifteen minutes at a time,
the doctor told her.

The radiation will penetrate
her right breast,
execute the killer cells.

Just like happens
in the county jail.
Some cold-faced murderer
is led down
a narrow corridor
to a room with a chair.
Only he gets just the one treatment.
And it’s instantaneous.

That’s what crosses her mind
as she sits in the waiting room,
trembling in a hospital dress
open at the front.

He deserves what he has coming to him.
She’s mad at herself for taking him in.
